Is Football Being Hit by the Oil Crisis?

Whether you are just viewing it or participating it everyone in the world enjoys football. When tournaments such as the World Cup are on whole families and countries get together in celebration of their national team.

We all know that for a long while football has been one of the highest paid industries in the world. Resent offerings that Manchester City have been offering for Kaka are in the region of around half a million a week. I just can't believe how can a club pay some one half a million per week to play football?

Well to be honest I do not think that it will last much longer due to the current economic climate that we are facing. The credit crunch started in late 2008 and things are set to get worse in 2009. There are 2 industries that have felt the heat the most and they are property and oil. Most of the club owners such as Roman Abramovich will be facing a hard time with the current financial situation.

A barrel of oil has reduced it's price to a very low figure leaving millionaires shuffling around the businesses so that they make a good profit. I believe this means pulling back on the spending that they have been doing for football clubs. Ok I know that football is a very profitable business, but when you are paying only one player half a million a week, how profitable can the margins be? Even more if a club do not win anything for a season.

I think a lot of footballers are highly over rated and no one in the world unless you are a business owner and have worked hard for it deserves to get that amount of money. No wonder we are in economic difficulties when businesses and banks spend stupidly.

Steven Gerrard faces prison

The global English football star, Steven Gerrard could be put in prison for up to five years if he is found guilty of assault in Liverpool earlier this week. The alleged assault was bought up from a disturbance at a Merseyside nightclub on December 26th. Liverpool football club have issued a statement saying that they would offer Steven all the legal help he needs in order to get him out of this mess. The twenty eight year old was arrested along with five other men near the Lounge Inn in Southport which is on the outskirts of Liverpool. A 34 year old man was taken to hospital with facial injuries after the alleged incident.

Steven Gerrard has played for Liverpool for the last ten years and in all fairness similar accusations regularly pop up around famous football stars as they are constantly in the lime light with the public. The Football Association in the UK said it would not be making any comment on the situation regarding Steven Gerrard and his position in the England squad was not under question. The FA added that players will continue to be considered for playing for their national side while police investigations are being processed.

Steven Gerrard has been capped by England 70 times and has captained his country four times which is an incredible professional achievement. He was made an MBE last year and received an honorary award fellowship from Liverpool John Moores University. There is no doubt that he is one of the best footballers this country has seen and to think that he may spend time in prison is very impossible to believe. We will simply have to wait and see the outcome yet it not un-heard of that global stars such as, Steven Gerrard always get accused of things like this when in actual fact they are not true what so ever!
